How it happened

I always struggled with what to wear to my classroom. I’m mostly a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal, and I don’t like uncomfortable clothing. I love clothes and I love shopping, but for the first time in my life I didn’t have time to shop for clothes. I had lesson plans, grading, and surviving to do. I always felt like I could be dressing better for my role as a teacher, but I didn’t really know how to find the time to do it.

Five years into teaching Stitch Fix was released. I signed up for my first “fix” the second month they were live. The idea of having a personal stylist was awesome. I received my first fix and everything was adorable, but it was way too expensive for my teacher’s budget. So, I cancelled my next fix.

A year later I was desperate for clothes and I started reading up on Stitch Fix again. It seemed like people were getting items that were much more affordable, and I had just learned about “capsule” wardrobes, where you have a small amount of high-quality clothes that you can put into any outfit. After buying a ton of clothes that I didn’t love, and then replacing them with more clothes I didn’t love, I figured it might actually save me money to do just Stitch Fix.

The Change in My Classroom

I told my stylist what I needed to wear in my classroom, not what I was comfortable with. In my next 3 fixes, she was able to send me a good mixture of professional items that I loved, but were fancier than my usual style. I was SO excited to wear my outfits to work. Getting up in the morning was exciting again because I had an outfit chosen by a stylist and suggestions on how to wear it. It took the thinking out of my mornings and I also got a lot of compliments on my outfits!

I noticed that I was happier and more confident in my classroom, which pretty quickly rubbed off on my students. I also noticed that lead to more respect and communication from parents. It wasn’t that I needed clothes to obtain those things – it was that the confidence they gave me allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and go for it!

Is it worth it?

Yes! It’s totally worth it if:

  • You hate shopping, don’t have time, or love clothes so much that you want fun stuff in your mail that’s been hand-picked for you.
  • You see cute outfits on Pinterest, but have a hard time putting outfits like that together.
  • You’re willing to let go a little and let someone else dress you. For me, this took the stress away completely.

The way it works is that you sign up here, fill in your style profile, and choose a date to receive your first fix. Make sure to leave a very specific note for your specialist when you schedule a fix. I also leave another link to my Pinterest board so that they know I want them to look at it closely.

Tips for Stitch Fix

In the note to your stylist, ask for outfits. I’ve told mine repeatedly that I can’t put an outfit together. You get 5 items in every fix, which ends up being two complete outfits for me with the 5th item either being an accessory or another coordinating item. I also tell my stylist the colors I have in my wardrobe so that I’ll get pieces that coordinate with what I already have.

My instructions:

  • Send complete outfits.
  • Keep colors blue, gray, or red with any color accents.
  • Check my Pinterest board to see my style. I’m constantly updating this board with new outfits I see that I love.

I wore this beautiful outfit to class with a necklace from my Rocksbox subscription (code performingineducationxoxo gets you a free month trial), the super soft and warm cardigan the stylist sent with it, and a pair of boots. I know I can also wear it to special occasions and date night as well! It’s a fixture in my wardrobe.

I usually just ask for clothes in my fix, but my stylist snuck in this cross body purse when she found out I had just become a mom. It has saved my life! I was always trying to shove my huge purse into the stroller before, but now I just throw this on and I know all of my important items are close (and not left in the diaper bag when I go somewhere for adult time… which has happened). This thoughtfulness is why I will continue to use the service!
