Why do I need 11 projects?

Each project uses math in a real-life scenario. Some projects are seasonal, while others can be used at any time in the year. Having all of these projects gives you the opportunity to do PBL in math all year long! And yes, I’ve had many teachers use every single project in one year. Once they do one, their students ask for more!

Do I need to teach standards before I start this?

PBL is a fantastic way to show students the relationships between standards and real life. You don’t need to wait until your standards have been taught! Most teachers incorporate mini-lessons and small group while using these projects to teach their math standards.

How long do these projects take?

It really depends on how far you take the scenarios. Some teachers like to bring in guest speakers and other enrichment opportunities during the project. If you’re just doing the included activities, it will take about a week for one project. If you add other experiences, the project will take 2-3 weeks.

Students will answer the driving question: What Math skills do I need to create and run a business? It’s Common Core aligned for Grade 5 and can be differentiated for many different ability levels. 5.G.1, 5.G.2, 5.NF.4, 5.NF.5b, 5.NBT.7

This project focuses on:

• Fraction Operations (add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators)

Fall Field Trip

Are your students excited about October? Mine absolutely love pumpkins, bats, and everything Halloween! This is a great activity to get students excited about Math! Project-Based Learning incorporates in-depth inquiring, voice, and choice. Students will choose two Fall field trips that interest them, then do all of the calculations to find out the total cost. They will then choose one field trip and present their field trip choice to their teacher. No prep required- just print and go!

Plan a Valentine’s Day Party

Great for 4th grade too! Apply: Multiplication & Division, Converting Between Feet & Inches, Graphing Area in Square Units, Decimal Operations. Challenge tasks are also included that incorporate calculating tax (multiplying decimals & percent skills) and cost per serving (dividing decimals). These can be used for advanced 4th & 5th graders or your regular 6th grade class. This allows for differentiation during this project!

Halloween Bash

Are your students so excited about Halloween that they can’t seem to concentrate on their work? This project will get them out of their seats, happily practicing the Math they’ve learned this year! Students will put their Math skills to work planning their very own Halloween party, using the guests of their choosing.
