## Description

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of time measurement including telling time, writing time, and finding elapsed time. In this 5-day unit, students will apply time concepts to plan a museum field trip. This telling time math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource covers concepts of time measurement and is aligned with the following 3rd Grade Math Common Core State Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1

• Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.

What’s included in this resource:

• Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around field trip planning before beginning their project.
• Review of Parts of a Clock: Using the included instructional pages, students will review the parts of a clock and how to tell time in 5-minute intervals.
• Telling Time to the Minute: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to tell time to the minute and practice writing time to the minute.
• Choosing Field Trip Activities: Students will apply concepts of time to determine the starting time for various museum activities and choose activities to attend on their field trip.
• Determining Elapsed Time: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to find elapsed time and use these skills to find out when different activities end.
• Time on a Number Line: Students will learn how to mark time on a number line and use a number line along with elapsed time concepts to determine when to leave for the field trip and when they can leave the field trip to return back to school.
• Wrap Up: Students will write up their final field trip agenda and explain their decisions.
