This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of addition and subtraction within 1,000. In this 5-day unit, students will apply adding and subtracting concepts to design and open a bed and breakfast. This basic computation addition and subtraction math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of adding and subtracting and is aligned with the following 3rd Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
- Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

What’s included in this resource:
- Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around designing a bed and breakfast.
- Learn About Addition: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to add within 1,000 with and without regrouping.
- Learn About Subtraction: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to subtract within 1,000 with and without regrouping.
- Learn About Budgets: Students will apply concepts of subtraction to manage a budget and calculate money remaining in their startup budget.
- Choose Housing: Students will choose a house for their bed and breakfast and deduct the cost from their budget.
- Choose Dining Room and Kitchen Furnishings: Students will choose items for the kitchen and dining room for their bed and breakfast and deduct the cost from their budget.
- Choose Bedroom Furnishings: Students will choose bedroom furnishings for their bed and breakfast and deduct the cost from their budget.
- Create a Breakfast Menu: Students will choose breakfast items to design a menu for their bed and breakfast and deduct the cost of groceries from their budget.
- Wrap Up: Students will write up their final bed and breakfast opening plan, review their final budget, and explain their decisions.
