Description

This resource is designed to help students have an overall understanding of nonfiction text structure along with the 5 specific ways that nonfiction texts are presented.  There is an introductory page to introduce students to the five types of nonfiction text structures. Students can use pages 7-8 in their interactive notebooks as a tool to help them identify each type of nonfiction text structure, along with what nonfiction text structure is, and why it is important.

 

This set of graphic organizers includes the five text structures for informational texts:

  • Problem and Solution
  • Cause and Effect
  • Compare and Contrast
  • Sequence of Events
  • Description

 

For each specific type of nonfiction text structure, there is an anchor chart and mini anchor charts. This resource is designed to be used with any text. This could be a text you’re reading whole-class or texts that students are reading independently.  A list of mentor texts for each text structure is included. There is also a graphic organizer included for each specific type of text structure. Finally, each text structure includes a page for students to demonstrate their understanding of the specific text structure using an open-ended question to answer in paragraph form.

 

This resource can be used in a variety of ways to help students apply their understanding of these different text structures.

 

Here are common uses for these graphic organizers:

  • Whole group concept practice
  • Literacy centers
  • Small group intervention
  • Assessment (display question and grade written response)

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.5: Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

FIFTH GRADE

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.5: Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts.
