Ditch the Valentine’s Day card exchange this year! This Valentine’s Day reading escape room is a great game for reviewing literature standards. Even better, your students will have so much fun that they won’t even know they’re doing reading problems!


This game reviews 4th-5th grade literature standards, including:

  • Drawing Inferences
  • Theme
  • Poetry
  • Summarizing
  • Character Traits
  • Vocabulary
  • Point of View
  • Story Structure
  • Figurative Language


And it builds classroom community!

Escape rooms are the most fun way to review the standards while encouraging team work, critical thinking, and problem solving! In this classroom escape, students will compete as teams to Escape the Garden of Love!


This resource is geared towards 4th and 5th grade (depending on your standards). Click here to find other grade levels and other 4th and 5th grade reading and math topics.


This team escape challenge is great for teams of 4-6 students, up to 8 teams. The best thing is, you don’t have to prepare envelopes for every single team. This activity was created to be much easier to prep than the traditional class escape challenge. You will use far less paper and far fewer envelopes than other challenges.


Supplies Needed:

  • 4 large manila folders (total)
  • 1 letter envelope (total)
  • Copies of this resource
  • Scissors, Glue, and Markers
  • Light Blue, Red, Purple, and Pink markers


You and your classmates are exploring the local garden on a special Valentine‚Äôs Day field trip when your friend notices something strange in the back garden.”Is that a floating heart emoji?”


Suddenly, a bunch of floating heart emojis pop up all over the garden. The emoji with sunglasses comes forward. “Welcome, class,” he says. “We’ve been waiting for some young people to work on our garden.”


You find out that this is the leader of the heart emojis, and that they’ve taken over the garden. They plan to keep the students in your class to work in the garden, but they agree to allow one group of you to leave ‚it’s Valentine’s Day, after all.


In order to decide who gets to go home, you will compete in a series of reading challenges. The first team to complete all ofthe challenges will be allowed to leave the garden and return home with an incredible story…

I also provide something very important for a group review game: individual student booklets to keep ALL students accountable. These are called escape logs in the game.


I’ve even provided a way to prevent one student from doing all of the work. Directions and special cards are included in the game to help manage it so that all students are competing equal work and successfully working together!
