5th Grade PBL Science | Structure & Properties of Matter | Scientific Method

Grade Level:

This 3-week project-based learning (science-focused) research-based unit is the perfect way to teach reading, writing, research skills, and the scientific method in one engaging, real-world unit. Your students will use key standards, such as research, reading comprehension, and inquiry in a real-life scenario based on structure and properties of matter. The best part about PBL is that student choice and differentiation are built in.

Driving Question: How can I design an experiment to prove to others that the total weight of matter is conserved even when it changes forms?

NGSS Standards Covered:

  • NGSS.5-PS1-2: Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.

Students are challenged to design an experiment using the scientific method to prove that the weight of matter is conserved when it undergoes a change in state.

Banish those boring worksheets and get your students excited about real life learning! This 3-week project covers the following skills:

  • Research
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Report Writing
  • Design & Creativity
  • Critical Thinking
