More About This Resource:
Interactive Reading notebook activities are meant to give students an interesting way to take notes to use as a reference in future activities. The Mentor Texts paired with these organizers are easy to understand examples of the standard in text.
Interactive Reading Notebooks Are Not Meant To Stand ALONE.
I use these activities and mentor texts as mini-lessons to introduce each standard. I do one of these mini lessons every 1-2 weeks. After completing a page in our Reading notebook, we read chapter books at grade level and apply these mini-lessons to more advanced text. I also lead partner, group, and class discussions about the text we are reading and I refer daily to their Interactive Reading Notebooks to build upon these lessons. Students use their notebooks as a reference on a daily basis. It is the best tool I have ever used for student achievement!
**Text is editable to customize for your classroom. You cannot change the graphics or organizers.
FAQ:
- How do I find these texts? Am I going to go broke buying all of them?
I found all of these texts at my local library! After I used them for a couple of years I decided to “invest” in them and buy them used on Amazon. A few were affordable enough to buy new with Prime shipping! Many texts are reused so that you only need a very reasonable amount of mentor text. The great thing about using these texts is that ALL of the activities are pre-planned for you in this resource, including teacher examples of every notes page!
- How many copies do I need?
Just one! Mentor text is meant to be read aloud and displayed so that students can see it. You do not need a text for each student! If students need to look more closely, you can pass the book around or leave it at the front of the room as a reference.
- Can I use this with my 1:1 devices?
Absolutely. There are a lot of great ways you can incorporate the devices. I like to record myself reading the text and share with my students on their devices so that they can read and reread through it whenever they’re looking at their notes and want to remember the text they used.
- Can I use different texts?
Yes! Follow the directions in the editable Power Point on how to edit to put in your own text names and information. You cannot edit the actual organizers – there is no need to. Just make a few small text changes and you’re good to go!
