This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of geometry, including quadrilaterals, parallel sides, and equal angles. In this 5-day unit, students will learn about the attributes of shapes and then use that understanding to design a floor plan for their school. This math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource is aligned with the following 3rd Grade Math Common Core State Standard:
- Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals).
- Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

What’s included in this resource:
- Background Knowledge: Students will review their environment to look for shapes that exist in the real world.
- Shape Review: Students will categorize the shapes that they’ve identified and begin sorting shapes they’re familiar with.
- Quadrilaterals: Students will learn about the various attributes of quadrilaterals: parallel sides, intersecting sides, and perpendicular sides. Students will apply that knowledge to designing a floor plan for their school.
- Understanding Quadrilaterals: Students will complete practice problems to demonstrate their understanding of the various attributes of quadrilaterals.
- 2D School Model: Students will design a 2D model of the entryway to their school building following guidelines given by their architect. The students will add a few finishing touches and present their entryway with shapes identified.
- Wrap Up: Students will complete a short review of their work.
