This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about decimal operations including adding decimals and multiplying decimals by a power of 10. In this 5-day unit, students will apply decimal concepts to create a plan for opening a school coffee shop. This decimal math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of time measurement and is aligned with the following 5th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2
- Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

- Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around coffee shops, how they operate, and how they generate profit.
- Review Place Value: Using the included instructional pages, students will review place value.
- Adding Decimals: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to line the decimals up when adding two decimals together.
- Determining Profit & Choose Menu Items: Students will apply concepts of decimal addition to determine the profit of various items and decided on items to add to their menu.
- Multiplying Decimals by Powers of 10: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to multiply decimals by a power of ten by moving the decimal within the number.
- Reevaluate Menu: Students will determine whether they should increase or decrease the profit for items on their menu.
- Wrap Up: Students will write up their final coffee shop plan and explain their decisions.
