Math Project-Based Learning: Fractions on a Number Line | 3rd Grade

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about fractions on a number line and finding equivalent fractions using a number line. In this 5-day unit, students will learn about fractions and then use that understanding to plan an ice cream party for their friends. This fraction math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource covers concepts of fraction number lines and is aligned with the following 3rd Grade Math Common Core State Standards:

• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.2
  Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.

• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3
  Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.

What’s included in this resource:

• Background Knowledge: Students will brainstorm what they already know about ice cream recipes and making ice cream.
• Fraction Review: Students will review what a fraction is and review that the parts of a fraction need to be partitioned equally.
• Choosing Recipes: Students will choose ice cream flavors for their guests from a variety of recipes.
• Understanding Fraction Number Lines: Students will learn how to mark fractions on a number line and then mark the ingredients they need on a number line.
• Equivalent Fractions: Students will learn how to compare and determine whether fractions are equivalent using a number line. They will then use this skill to determine whether they have enough of each ingredient for their party.
• Choose Ingredients: Students will use what they’ve learned to choose which ingredients they should purchase.
• Wrap Up: Students will illustrate the ire cream that they’ll be making for their party and label the various fractions that relate to the ice cream of their choosing.
