This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of volume measurement. In this 5-day unit, students will apply volume concepts to plan out a community garden for their school. This volume math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of volume measurement and is aligned with the following 5th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.3
- Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.4
- Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.5
- Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.
What’s included in this resource:
- Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around community gardens before beginning their project.
- Determining Volume of Rectangular Prisms: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to find volume and apply concepts of volume to practice problems.
- Choose Plants: Students will determine which planters to place in their gardens by calculating the volume and determining which plants fit into various planter sizes.
- Determining Volume of Irregular Shapes: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to find volume of irregular shapes and apply concepts of volume to practice problems.
- Selecting Irregularly Shaped Planters: Students will determine which planters to place in their gardens by calculating the volume of irregularly shaped planters and determining which plants fit into various planter sizes.
- Designing the Garden: Students will use the planters and plants that they have previously selected to create a final layout for their garden and calculate the total volume of the planters included in their garden.
