Math Project-Based Learning: Long Division One-Digit Divisors | 4th Grade Math

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about long division with one-digit divisors (with and without remainders). In this 5-day unit, students will divide whole numbers of up to 4 digits by a one-digit number to design a flower shop. This division math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it’s available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource covers concepts of long division and is aligned with the following 4th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6

Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

What’s included in this resource:

• Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around flower shop ideas and begin planning their flower shop.
• Division Concepts: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to divide with one-digit divisors, including using area models.
• Plant Flowers: Students will calculate the amount of square footage needed to plant each type of flower they choose to stock at the flower shop.
• Cut Flowers: Using division concepts, students will determine how many water buckets are needed to store their cut flowers.
• Interpreting Remainders: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to interpret and utilize remainders in division problems.
• Flower Coolers: Using division concepts, students will purchase enough flower coolers to store their water buckets.
• Custom Arrangements: Using division concepts, students will select vases and ribbons to create custom flower arrangements.
• Calculate Totals: Using division concepts, students will determine how many vases and ribbons they’ll use creating their custom arrangements.
• Wrap Up: Students will make an advertisement to showcase their final custom arrangements.
